TRINDERS' FINE
TOOLS
PICTURE ARCHIVE -
TOOLS SOLD
Visitors
to www.trindersfinetools.co.uk have suggested that an archive of pictures and
descriptions of tools we have sold would prove interesting and informative. In
general, we have not included descriptions of tools for which we have no
pictures; but we have included pictures which only have a bare description -
occasionally items sold so quickly that a formal web description was not
produced.
T631) CLEVELAND TWIST DRILL COMPANY Drill
Set No. 52 Containing Wire Gauge Sizes No. 1 to No. 60. Drills mounted on a
most attractive stand (click for photograph).
Stand is bronze(?) with a black crackle finish, rubbed on the lettering to show
the bronze. Complete with original heavy steel box, (8 1/2" x 5" x 1
3/8") black painted, 80+% remains of exterior trade label; inside,
originally attached to inside of lid, sheet giving instructions on Point
Grinding and 'The Little Doctor' A First-Aid for Drill Press Operators.
This label is marked at lower margin BS-5-3-43 - possibly an indication of the
date? Drills 1-21, 23-52 each numbered; all except a couple are also
trademarked (the markings on No. 33 are slightly different to the other
markings). No. 22 is unmarked; the very smallest drills, 53-60, are also
unmarked. A very attractive piece. US$ 112.5 / 75.00 pounds sterling SORRY, SOLD
T642) A
collection of 13 Silversmithing Stakes (click for photograph). Whilst these are being sold as a
collection, if you require individual details, do let us know. Total weight of these
stakes is 6 kilo. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T696) 41
ADDIS CARVING CHISELS (click for first, second, third, fourth, and final photograph); uniform handles, all little used. SORRY, SOLD
T697) ELEVEN,
BEECH-HANDLED, ADDIS CARVING CHISELS (click for first, and second photograph),
described in detail below. This is a useful collection of what I suspect are
completely unused, carving tools. One or two of the gouges are infrequently
found, as they are on the large side. I should note that one of the larger
gouges has a cracked brass ferrule; one chisel handle has two very fine
hairline cracks some 3/4” long, and one other has a very fine hairline
crack approximately 1/2”
long.
No. 18?19, curved gouge 3/4"; No. 20, curved
gouge 3/8"; No. 20, curved gouge 3/4"; No. 21, bent chisel,
5/8"; No. 22, right corner chisel, 5/8"; No. 23, left corner chisel,
5/8"; No. 29, front bent gouge 3/4"; No. 31, front bent gouge
3/4"; No. 35, back bent gouge 3/8"; No. 35, back bent gouge
3/4"; No. 38, back bent gouge 3/8".
Do consider these carefully if you have the
need – whilst we always try and seek them out, finding Addis carving
chisels of this condition and quality is becoming a very difficult task. SORRY, SOLD
T624) ADDIS Carving Chisels. We have
just taken into stock a large collection - 86 in all - Addis carving chisels,
with ash and beech handles. A good proportion are new and those having
had a bevel ground are very little used indeed. The range of types and sizes is
extensive, with quite a number in large sizes. These chisels represent the
best collection and best condition I have seen since dealing in tools; they
were apparently a major retirement purchase. I intend to offer them initially
as one complete lot, so do contact us if you are at all interested. What
follows is a complete set of pictures (click for picture one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen), so you can get a
good idea of the quality. NB - Unfortunately, the combination of shadows and a
ripple pattern on the background cloth does give the false impression
that some of the larger carvers have a serrated edge - I will try and re-take
these pictures as soon as possible (sorry, time didn’t permit)! But at
least the current pictures give you an idea of the range, and depth within the
range, of these fine chisels. SORRY, SOLD
T651) Boxed
Set of 18 ADDIS Carving Tools (click for photograph); inside of box lid has Addis, Ward & Payne labels (click for photograph), very little used, a very nice set. SORRY, SOLD
T676) Box
of Fine Rosewood Handled Japanese Chisels (click for photograph, and again, and again). SORRY, SOLD
T649) Boxed
set of 10 Japanese Chisels (click for photograph, and again for close-up) SORRY, SOLD
T527) Set of 5
Japanese IYOROI Chisels (click
for picture), size 3mm, 6mm, 12mm, 18mm and 24mm. (approximately 1/8",
1/4", 1/2", 23/32, 15/16") overall length approximately 227 mm /
9". Hardwood handles, very dark - ebony(?). Very attractive set, virtually
unused - apparently originally purchased some ten years ago. In cardboard box,
as shown in photograph. F. SORRY, SOLD
T628) 11 small MARPLES Carving Chisels, one unhandled (click for
picture one, two). SORRY, SOLD
T522) Attractive Carving Set - chisels by Henry Taylor; all items
pleasantly marked by pyrography with former owner's name or initials (click for photograph). SORRY,
SOLD
T85) Cranked, boxwood handled Gouges by Ashley Iles (click for photograph), Sheffield. Inside cannelled
set of 7, shallow cranks (approximately 1 1/4" deep), 1/8",
3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 5/8", 3/4" widths,
blade length excluding crank approximately 7" - 8". Fine set. SORRY, SOLD
T184) MARPLES Wood Turning tools (Click for
photograph), Shamrock Brand. A set of 6 in original display box and packing
material; all tools have a fine Shamrock label. Very fine set, suit collector.
US$ 145.00 / 85.00 pounds sterling SORRY, SOLD
T…) HOLTZAPFFEL TRIPTYCH, 40 of 75 tools (Click for photograph) SORRY,
SOLD
T650) HOLTZAPFFEL 64 Charing Cross Wide Quirk
and Ogee Wooden Moulding Plane; 9
¼” long, 2 ¾” wide. Nice example (click
for photograph), uncommon; clear Holtzapffel stamp (click
again) SORRY, SOLD
T205) HOLTZAPFFEL IVORY SAW (click for photograph) 36 ½" overall length,
blade 2" x 19", handle 11 ¾" long and approximately 1
½" dia. Frame 1 ¼" x ¼" steel, stamped
HOLTZAPFFEL & CO LONDON, 5" gap between top of blade and underside of
frame. This saw resembles a very large straight-handled hacksaw, and is
illustrated in Charles Holtzapffel's 'Turning and Mechanical Manipulation' Vol.
1. (Materials), page 147, Fig. 49. I can supply a facsimile of this
illustration by e-mail to anyone interested. Although the blade and frame are
tarnished with light pitting and some wear has taken place on the teeth, it is
in very good condition and represents a very unusual collector's item. It would
appear that these saws were used (by presumably an ivory merchant) in the
conversion of ivory tusks in order to ensure maximum economy. G+. SORRY, SOLD
T371) Attractive Gunmetal/Brass(?) unnamed Chariot Plane (Click for photograph) with steel sole, and very
handsome ebony wedge. 3" long, 1 ½" wide, 1 ¼"
iron, I would judge little used. Certainly an owner-made plane, in very good
condition. The strike button is a little bent, and strangely, the bridge has
been set in less than parallel to the nose!! Otherwise it is a very
professionally made plane, and very useful. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T227) Scottish over-stuffed all GUNMETAL SMOOTHER (Click for photograph) (not steel-soled) 10"
long including handle mounting, 2 ½" wide, 2 1/8" Preston
tapered iron, approximately 2 ¼" remains, Ward back iron. This is a
very fine example of a craftsman-made smoother, stuffed in a dark red wood,
which I believe is mahogany. The handle is very attractive, rather more
vertical than normal, with a very elongated and slim spur, very much in the
Spiers' style. The front bun is moulded, but square in plan. I rather suspect
that this plane may have been made up from a commercially available base and
cap casting, early this century. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T161) Jack Plane, 12 ¼" overall length (Click for photograph), 2" iron, 2" remains. No
name other than owner's (A.W. Silver) stamped on handle, however iron and cap
are stamped E. J. Birch London. Appears to be cast iron, screw filled with
mahogany? or rosewood? with heavy coat of varnish, making it difficult to be
precise. The handle and rounded back are a particularly attractive feature of
this interesting plane. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T520) Scottish shapely cast, screw sided, over-stuffed panel plane, gunmetal
screw cap, with hardwood (probably mahogany) infill (click
for photograph). 13 3/8" long, 2 7/8" wide, 2 1/2" wide
tapered Stormont iron, also stamped 1944, together with other serial numbers.
Approximately 2 5/8" slot to edge available steel remains. Metalwork is
very good, but dull grey in appearance, with all round non-significant,
remaining fine pitting. The infill, other than some minor nicks on the top of
the shapely bun, and one or two on one side of the overstuffing, is excellent.
No makers name, however, as can be seen from the photograph, with its shapely
stepped front toe, this is a very handsome and heavy plane indeed; which in
these days are becoming very difficult to find. The mouth, when the iron is
ground and honed, will, I judge, measure some 3/64" when the iron is just
cutting. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T200) Moving Fillister by BOOTH BROTHERS, DUBLIN (Click for photograph), also stamped twice on toe and twice
on heel by previous owner D. Doyle. Boxwood wear strip 5/8" x 1" held
in by 3 dovetails. Small chip off nicker iron wedge. Apart from the brass,
which has been a little over-cleaned, this is a very good user plane. G+. SORRY, SOLD
T377) BUCK Tottenham Court Rd London Patent
Metal Bullnose Plane (Click for
photograph), Rosewood wedge. 3 ¾" long, 1 1/8" wide, 1
1/8" wide iron, approximately 1" remains. Body, wedge and iron all
stamped 2; seen very little use from new, iron full length. G++ / Fine. SORRY, SOLD
T596) BUCK Rosewood filled Rebate Plane (click
for photograph), nominally 1 1/2" wide, 9 1/8" long, nominal 1
1/2" wide Ward snecked iron, approximately 1 3/8" remains below
shoulder. Rosewood good condition, but stamped in a number of places by previous
owner. Although legible, the maker's stamp 'Buck 245 Tottenham Court Rd.' [N.B.
- British Planemakers lists this address as being 1838 - 1861] is very faint.
Rather nice old style scroll wedge. Steelwork good, but with some residual
pitting - not of course in any way affecting use. The sole opening for the
mouth is very fine. The back of then iron, when flattened and polished may
still have one or two fine pits well away from the edge; these I would be
reluctant to totally remove. The body, wedge and iron are all stamped '2'. All
in all a very good and useful plane for the bench. G+ SORRY, SOLD
T608) BUCK (Norris No 14?) Rosewood filled, unhandled, Patent Metal
Smoother (click for photograph), 7 1/4" long, 2
5/8" maximum width, 2 1/4" wide Ward iron, approximately 1 7/16"
remains, slot to edge. Iron, back iron, and body all stamped 22. Previous
owner's stamp on top of bun. Patent Metal cast body is very good - just a trace
of fine surface pitting. Rosewood very dark, very nice, with perhaps 60%
lacquer remaining, particularly on top of rear infill and top of front bun.
Gunmetal screwcap stamped Buck 242 Tottenham Court Road (1880 - 1930, according
to British Planemakers). This is an extremely crisp and attractive little plane.
Since Buck were large tool merchants, it is difficult to know whether this was
supplied by Norris, and stamped with the Buck name and address, or made and
manufactured by Buck to the Norris design. Either way, it is a very attractive
plane in nice original condition. G++. SORRY,
SOLD
T341) Rosewood filled curved sided unhandled Smoother by BUCK (242
Tottenham Court Road, London) (Click for photograph)
7 ½" long 2 5/8" maximum width, 2 ¼" iron, 1
5/16" remains of Ward iron. Body, cap and iron all stamped '47'. Rosewood
very good, bright steelwork has some slight remaining pitting, otherwise an
attractive plane. G+ SORRY, SOLD
T626) CARTER Boxwood filled, Dovetailed Thumb Plane (click for picture). 5 1/8" long, 1 3/4" wide, 1
3/8" wide new iron. The plane is essentially in as new condition, with
little if any wear. The iron is stamped Carter Cast Steel, the gunmetal
screwcap is stamped Carter; the boxwood is stamped 'Diana' and 'Dovetailed' at
heel. It has a particularly fine mouth. A very attractive all-steel thumb plane
from this quality maker. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T581) Dovetailed Bronze and Steel, Gunmetal Screwcap Thumb Plane (click for photograph) by Carter,
4 5/8" long, 1 5/16" wide, 1" wide iron, a copy of an early
Mathieson plane, one of the rarest of all British Metal planes. Ebony infill,
stamped 'Sarah and Billy Carter London'. An extremely attractive copy of the
very scarce original. A fine mouth. Fine. SORRY,
SOLD
T580) Superb miniature Dovetailed Bronze and Steel Mitre Plane (click for (new!) photograph) by Carter,
4 3/8" long x 1 3/8", 1" wide iron. Rosewood wedge and
infill, lovely colour and figure. Cupid's bow steel bridge, stamped Carter
London. A fine example of a miniature mitre plane, both highly decorative and
useful; with of course, an extremely fine mouth. Fine. SORRY, SOLD
T573) CARTER Gunmetal and Steel-soled,
Rosewood filled Mitre Plane (click for photograph),
10" long x 2 5/8" wide; cupid-bow decoration around edge and
scalloped edge to screw cap. Particularly finely figured rosewood infill.
Stamped 'Carter London' on gunmetal
screw cap, and Carter 1999 (which is
of course the date of manufacture) on heel under blade; full length blade,
stamped Sarah and Billy Carter Cast Steel
Leicester on upper face and J. Fearn
Ltd Sheffield Warranted Cast Steel on reverse. Very fine mouth. Fine. SORRY, SOLD
T497) A unique Gunmetal and Steel, Rosewood filled, 'Cupid's Bow'
Dovetailed Mitre Plane (click for view of left
and right sides) by Bill
Carter. Approximately 10" x 2 5/8", full-length snecked iron
2 3/16", stamped 'Sarah and Billy
Carter Cast Steel Leicester' (slightly irregular) on face, 'J Fearn Ltd Sheffield Warranted Cast Steel'
on back. Gunmetal lever cap stamped 'Carter London'; body of plane stamped
'Carter Inventor Cupid's Dovetails' (again
slightly irregular). Upper edge of body is detailed with the cupid's bow motif.
The dovetails (click for detail) are an original and
remarkable achievement, being cut, filed and peened into the cupid's bow motif
on both the sides and the sole of this unique plane. SORRY, SOLD
T368) COPLEY LAMBETH all Brass/Ebony Shoulder Plane (Click for photograph). 7 ½" long, 1
¼" wide, 1 ¼" wide iron, 1 5/16" remains of
Marples Shamrock brand iron. 3 previous owners stamps around strike button.
Fine crack across ebony infill behind front nose - often the case in brass or
gunmetal shoulder planes, otherwise a very attractive plane. G++ SORRY, SOLD
T644) DISSTON Philadelphia No. 5 Brass-Backed Tenon Saw (click
for photograph), Beech(?) handle, 8” long, approximately 2 3/16” of
blade, measured from below the brass back to the edge. Handle stamped by previous
owner. Most original lacquer remains on handle, which is stamped on both sides
by previous owner. A handy Disston tenon saw, not easily found in this very
lightly used condition. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T188) ENTWISTLE, G. Very fine copy of a NORRIS No. 27 Bullnose plane (Click for photograph) with adjuster, in brass with steel
sole in fitted box. This plane is 1 1/16" wide, 4" long, and is
stamped G. ENTWISTLE 1996. A wonderful example of modern plane making. F. SORRY, SOLD
T321) Fine and high-quality handled BRIDLE
PLOUGH PLANE (Click
for photograph) by John Harley (Old Haymarket, Liverpool). The handle, body
and wedge are in boxwood, the handle and body being made from one piece, with
fitted skate front. The beech fence carries a heavy brass lining, and the stems
are in ebony with brass tips, together with a heavy brass bridle. There is some
pitting on the five steel pin heads attaching the skate together with some
overall fine pitting to the skate, however this does not detract from the
appearance. Toe stamped clearly by maker, previous owners stamp in three
places, two double-stamped. This is most definitely a very rare and handsome
plane - and looks far, far finer than my description. G++ SORRY, SOLD
T462) HOLLAND LONDON Rosewood filled, wedged,
unhandled cast iron Smoother with Brass bridge, stamped 483, Holland London
(click for
photograph). 7 11/16" long, 2 9/16" wide, 2
1/4" wide iron, 1 1/4" remains. Bright metal very good, only a little
residual fine pitting remains. Rosewood very dark and generally very good;
wedge has some bruising. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T496) HOLTEY Cast Gunmetal, Steel soled Adjustable Bullnose Plane,
with Rosewood infill and wedge (click for photograph).
4" long, 1 1/8" wide, 1 1/8" wide iron, iron full length - that
is approximately 1 1/8" usable steel. The iron is plain, and not stamped
in any way, but the adjuster knob is engraved HOLTEY FINMERE. The gunmetal is
now a subdued finish from handling; the rosewood is fine, as is the sole and
blade. All in all, a fine example of a rare plane. SORRY, SOLD
T572) HOLTEY Adjustable, Dovetailed, Admiralty Brass and Steel, Ebony
infilled 'A28' Chariot Plane (click for photograph).
3 1/2" x 1 9/16", 1 1/4" blade; virtually unused. A very early
example of Holtey's professional work; engraved HOLTEY on nose, 'A28/DBE/001'
on heel (DBE - dove-tailed, brass, ebony?); blade engraved HOLTEY. A fine
example of English planemaking. F. SORRY, SOLD
T425) HOLTEY Rosewood filled, Admiralty Brass and Steel sole,
Dovetailed, Adjustable Chariot Plane (click for
photograph). Approximately 3 7/8" long, 1 7/8" wide, 1 1/2"
wide iron, approximately 2 3/8" blade edge to first hole. The iron has
been honed. The iron is stamped Holtey; Holtey is also stamped on the inside of
the body. Blade stamped 4; also body stamped 4, and the date 1997. Steel,
rosewood and admiralty brass sides are all in very fine, close to new
condition, with just the occasional very, very fine scratch on the brass -
either caused during storage or possibly just trying out the plane A very nice
plane, in a handy wide size. Fine. SORRY, SOLD
T474) Unused HOLTEY Chariot Plane (click for
photograph). SORRY, SOLD
T475) Unused HOLTEY Thumb Plane (click for
photograph). SORRY, SOLD
T424) Unused HOLTEY Adjustable Mitre Plane (click
for photograph). SORRY, SOLD
T…) Unused HOLTEY Adjustable A11 Mitre Plane (click for photograph). SORRY,
SOLD
T426) Unused HOLTEY Adjustable Shoulder Plane (click for photograph). SORRY,
SOLD
T427) Unused HOLTEY Adjustable Thumb Plane (click
for photograph). SORRY, SOLD
T428) 'Just used' HOLTEY A13 Adjustable Smoother (click for photograph). SORRY,
SOLD
T373) MARPLES Shamrock Brand Jack Plane (Click for photograph)(Stanley No. 5 size).
14" long, 2 3/8" wide, 2" wide iron, 2" remains. Rosewood
handle and knob, all stamped by previous owner. Approximately 80% of original
varnish and paintwork remains, bright steel very good; in all a very little used
plane. These Marples copies of Stanley are as good if not better quality, and
becoming increasingly difficult to find - an interesting area for collecting.
G++. SORRY, SOLD
T413) MATHIESON No. 10 Beech and Hollow-Brass-stemmed Patented Plough
Plane, (click for photograph). The toe is
overstamped by previous owner, the wedge is bruised and the plane has the
normal nicks etc from use. The wood has a good colour, and is darkly stained in
places; also the fence has a small sliver off the edge bottom (not seen in the
photograph) approximately 1/8" x ½". It comes with a full set
(8) of Hildick irons. All in all a fine plane, one of the most expensive
Mathieson ever made. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T645) TYZACK Hollow Brass-Stemmed, Handled Beech
Ploughplane (click for photograph). Whilst the plane
is stamped Tyzack, 8 Old Street, London, this is undoubtedly a Mathieson plough, stamped for sale by
one of London’s major tool merchants. Woodwork good, some bruising on the
wedge, and the inevitable nicks and bruises acquired over the years. Nice
patina. There is of course some pitting to both the skate and the heads of the
screws securing it, and the clamping screw for the depth adjustment. Otherwise,
I suspect that this is a plane which has seen little use. G+. SORRY, SOLD
T464) MATHIESON Steel Bullnose Plane (click for
photograph), Rosewood wedge, 3 3/4" long, 1 1/8" wide, 1
1/8" wide iron, approximately 3/4" remains. Bright steel good, some
very fine residual pitting remains; rosewood wedge stamped on top and side by
previous owner. In all an excellent and very useful plane. G++. SORRY, SOLD
MATHIESON REBATE PLANES The following 5 rebate planes represent 4 different
sizes, with the largest size represented in both conventional and skew iron
– naturally, some are very much more uncommon in type or size than
others.
T659) MATHIESON Dovetailed Steel 3/4” wide, 8” long, Rosewood filled Rebate Plane (click for photograph). Body stamped 27 and 5, iron and
wedge stamped 27. 3/4” wide blade, approximately 1” remains. Very,
very light mist of pitting to metalwork, otherwise very crisp. Very slight
bruising to wedge, which is also rather crisp, owner’s stamp on front
nose, but rosewood generally is very nice. All in all a G++ example in a very
handy size. SORRY,
SOLD
T661) MATHIESON Dovetailed Steel, Nominally
1” wide x 9” Rosewood filled Rebate Plane (click
for photograph). 1” wide iron, approximately 1 1/8” remains. Body
infill stamped 6 and 5, wedge and iron stamped 6. Steelwork very crisp and
fresh, just a mist of pitting. Some deeper pitting on the upper stem of the
iron (under the wedge), not of course affecting use in any way. Rosewood
excellent, with just a minor bruise or two to the wedge. Again, definitely a
G++ plane, which has seen very, very little use. SORRY,
SOLD
T669) MATHIESON Dovetailed Steel, Rosewood filled Rebate Plane (click for photograph),
nominally 1 1/4” wide, 9” long, 1 1/4” wide iron, 1
1/8” remains. Body stamped 5. Previous owner’s stamp on nose.
Rosewood very good, but with a number of small nicks and bruises. Steel very
good, just a little pitting on the chamfers; sole good, mouth fine; however
there are two or three places on the sole where the dovetailing is visible. All
in all a good and reasonably crisp example. SORRY, SOLD
T662) MATHIESON Dovetailed Steel 1 1/2” wide, 9” long Rosewood filled
Rebate Plane (click for photograph). 1 1/2”
wide iron, 1 1/16” remains. Iron stamped 1 (faint), wedge also stamped 1,
body infill stamped 1 and 5. Owner’s stamp on rosewood at nose. Rosewood
wedge very crisp, one or two very minor scuffs; infill fine, except for very
fine, old haircrack across infill at the heel of the plane. Steelwork very
good. G++. SORRY,
SOLD
T663) MATHIESON Dovetailed Steel, Skew iron, 1
1/2” wide x 9” long Rosewood filled Rebate Plane (click for photograph).
1 1/2” wide iron, minimum
1 3/8” remains. Infill body stamped 2. Metalwork very good and crisp,
just a hint of mist pitting. Rosewood very good, just a fine score line on the
top of the wedge, largely (2/3rds) hidden from view when fitted in plane. All
in all a very crisp, little used plane in fine condition. Definitely G++. SORRY, SOLD
T511) MATHIESON Rosewood filled, Dovetailed, Curved sided open-handled
Smoother (click for photograph), 7 3/8" long,
2 5/8" wide, 2 1/4" wide Hildick iron, approximately 2 1/8" remain,
slot to edge. Good mouth, little or no pitting remains on sole, however some
pitting remains on the curved sides. The rosewood in the main is very good;
previous owner's initials in script on the front bun. The open handle however
has two very tight, but just detectable hair cracks which run round the handle
and connect on the inside of the handle. An attractive and very useful
smoother. G+. SORRY, SOLD
T590) MATHIESON Dovetailed (only obvious at toe and heel),
Parallel-sided, Rosewood infilled, Closed handle Smoother - very much in
the Slater style (click for photograph). 8 1/2"
long, 2 5/8" wide, 2 1/4" wide parallel Sorby iron, 1 13/16"
remains slot to edge. Rosewood very good, however front bun shows evidence of
being neatly re-glued. Rosewood is lightly stamped Mathieson on the nose,
together with two stamps of previous owner. Steelwork is good all round, just a
trace of residual pitting. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T594) MATHIESON Open-handled, Parallel sided, Dovetailed Smoother (click for photograph), 7 1/4" long, 2 9/16"
wide, 2 1/4" wide Mathieson parallel iron, 1 3/16" remains slot to
edge; Mathieson cap iron. Body, iron and cap iron are all un-numbered - but
look very contemporary. Rosewood very good, front bun has a number of shallow
bruises, low down. The front bun also has a piece of rosewood keyed in - in
fact a very unobtrusive and professional repair. Approximate size of the keyed
piece is 1" x 1" x 3/16". I suspect this was due to a chip. Handle
is very crisp, with the original Mathieson decal (click
for photograph - the first we have seen on a Mathieson infill plane). Steelwork
good, but with some occasional pitting, not of course affecting use. All in
all, a very nice plane, that appears in unusually nice and crisp condition.
G++. SORRY, SOLD
T396) MATHIESON curved sided, rosewood infilled smoother (Click for photograph) , 7 1/4" long, 2 5/8" wide at maximum,
2 1/4" wide Mathieson iron, 2 5/8" remains - iron is I suspect just
honed). Rosewood is fine with virtually complete original finish, bright steel
is unmarked and still greased, and almost all original lacquer remains on cap.
The original Mathieson box is
extensively repaired by gluing; however the label is for a parallel sided
smoother - presumably an error at original point of sale. All in all a very
fine and collectable plane. SORRY, SOLD
T604) MATHIESON Rosewood filled, Dove-tailed, Square-ended Panel Plane
(click for photograph), 13 1/2" long,
approximately 2 7/8" wide, 2 1/2" wide Mathieson iron, 1 1/2"
remains. Iron and body stamped SS; steelwork very good, though some slight
pitting remains - but of course not affecting use. Rosewood very good, stamped twice
at heel and once at toe by previous owner. The shapely front bun has clearly
been detached at some time in the past, and has been very neatly re-glued and
re-pinned with what appears to be 4 rosewood dowels visible on the top of the
bun. The whole job done very professionally and some little time ago. Aside
from this, we have a very fine and good quality Mathieson plane. Definitely
G++, with good broad chamfers on the steel. SORRY,
SOLD
T375) MATHIESON Rosewood filled Panel Plane (Click
for photograph), 13 ½" long, 2 7/8" wide, 2 ½"
wide Mathieson iron, 2 ¼" remains, together with nicely stamped
back iron. Bright steel work has occasional light pitting; rosewood is very
good, with the usual fine Mathieson vigorous handle design with long spur. At
7lb+ an excellent plane for difficult wood, in a handy size. G+/G++. SORRY, SOLD
T357) MELHUISH London (copy of SPIER'S) GUNMETAL Shoulder Plane (Click for photograph) - not steel-soled. Rosewood filled.
Approximately 7 5/8" long, 1 ¼"wide, 1 ¼" Ward
iron, 1 3/8" remains. Iron stamped 4 as is body. Original varnish 95%;
just an edge of original lacquer on gunmetal remains. Three very fine hair-line
cracks across infill. Note:- a very interesting and scarce model, with an
identical profile to T331, the Spiers steel shoulder
plane recently sold by us. Given the similarity of this plane to Spier's
models, and the fact that Melhuish was essentially a tool dealer, it is very
probable that this plane was made by Spiers for Melhuish. The iron has been
sharpened but very little used. A very attractive plane, with little chance of
being repeated. G++ - Fine. SORRY, SOLD
T620) MILLER style GUNMETAL, Steel-soled Shoulder Plane (click for picture),
Ebony filled. Approximately 8" long, 1 1/2" wide, 1 1/2"
wide iron, approximately 7/16" remains. Metal and woodwork very good, G++.
SORRY, SOLD
T337) MILLERS FALLS Smoothing Plane (Click for photograph), 9
1/4" overall length, 2" cutter, 1 9/16" remains. Rosewood handle
and knob. Little used plane. Knob and handle retain 90+% of original varnish,
slightly rubbed to one side of handle spur. Steel work good, exposed part of
blade and cap has some fine pitting. 80% remains of paintwork on body and frog.
All in all a nice quality plane. G++. SORRY,

T437) MILLERS FALLS No. 14 Beech(?) handled Jack Plane (click for photograph), 14" long, 2 3/8" wide,
2" wide iron, 1 3/8" remains. Small chip ¼" x
¼" x 1/16" off base of front knob; varnish on handle and knob
a little scratched. 90% paintwork remains, bright steel good, overall G++. SORRY, SOLD
T314) MILLERS FALLS No. 14 Jack Plane (Click for photograph) 14" long, 2 3/8"
wide, 2" cutter 1 7/8" remains. Rosewood handle and knob. Some
scratching on sole, but otherwise a very clean crisp plane that has seen very
little use. G++ SORRY, SOLD
T436) MILLERS FALLS No. 22 Beech(?) handled
Jointer (click for photograph),
22" long, 2 7/8" wide, 2 3/8" wide iron, 1 3/8" remains.
Woodwork very good, as is bright steel, 90% paintwork remains. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T687) For restoration – lacks handle. MOSELEY Parallel Smoother, very dark Rosewood filled (click for photograph), 7 5/8” long, 2 5/8”
wide, 2 1/4” wide Marples iron, 1 1/4” remains slot to edge, iron
has previous owner’s stamp; cap iron stamped Marples. The rosewood is extremely
dark, fresh and crisp; the front bun has two owner’s stamps. The metal
body is also very fresh and crisp, with just a hint of remaining pitting on one
side. The gunmetal screw cap is very attractive and fresh, stamped John Moseley
and Son, 54 Broad Street, Bloomsbury – which is a district in London.
According to Goodman’s British Planemakers they are listed at this
address from 1862-1880. All in all, an extremely attractive plane, and quite
scarce. I can only assume that the original handle was irrevocably damaged,
although there is no other evidence of damage to the plane. For what we have, I
would grade it as G++ or better; if you have the necessary skills and a
suitable piece of dark rosewood some 1 1/8”
– 1 1/4” thick, this could once again be a very attractive and
useful plane. SORRY, SOLD
T606) NORRIS No. 1 (non-adjustable), Dovetailed, Panel Plane (click
for photograph); Rosewood infill; approximately 14 1/2" long, 2
13/16" wide, 2 1/2" wide, slightly tapered iron by Sandusky, with
Ward cap iron, 1 13/16" remains slot to edge. Steelwork very good, very
little residual pitting, previous owner's partial initials stamped on the side,
close to the nose. Rosewood very good on both front and rear infills. Front bun
cap shows light and dark wood - very difficult to know if it naturally occurred
that way, or whether two pieces have been used. Two very minor points I should
mention on the gunmetal screw cap - there is a small blemish on the face, and a
very slight bruise on the top. All in all, a very nice and attractive panel
plane, one of the earlier examples. G+ to G++. SORRY, SOLD
T710) NORRIS No. 1 Dovetailed, Rosewood
filled Panel Plane (click
for photograph), 15 1/2” long, 2 13/16” wide,
2 1/2" wide Spear and Jackson parallel iron, 2 3/4” remains slot to
edge, Norris cap iron. Possibly one or two repairs to spur, very nice figured
rosewood throughout, steelwork very nice, with only one or two minor dings. A
nice, early No. 1, in rather crisp condition, uncommon length. SORRY, SOLD
T566) NORRIS No. 1, early example, Rosewood filled, Dove-tailed Panel
Plane (click for photograph). 15 1/2" long, 2
13/16" wide, 2 1/2" wide early parallel Norris iron (large shield stamp,
in serrated border - click for photograph); 1
11/16" remains, slot to edge. Body, iron, back-iron and, most unusually,
clamping screw all stamped '6'. Bright steel very good, with particularly
attractive deep, crisp chamfers; there is very little residual pitting.
Rosewood very good, perhaps 85+% original lacquer remaining; handle is
typically early profile. There is however evidence of a small chip having been
re-glued on the spur - but it is not readily noticeable - click
for photograph. All in all, a very attractive, early example of a No. 1. It is
particularly unusual and nice to find a crisp model with the early shield stamp
on the iron, where all parts down to the screw are original. SORRY, SOLD
T571) NORRIS Dovetailed, Rosewood filled A1 Panel Plane (click for photograph); 14 1/2" long, 2 7/8"
wide, 2 1/2" wide large stamp (early) Norris iron, 1 3/8" remains
slot to edge. Iron and body stamped '2'. Rosewood very good, approximately 80%
original lacquer remains; previous owner's stamp on front bun; very small chip
off the bun 'plinth' - perhaps 3/8" x 1/8". Bright steelwork very
good, a little residual pitting remaining on sole and sides - on one side it is
more localised. Of course this does not in any way affect use. All in all, a
very nice plane, that has seen comparatively little use. G++ SORRY, SOLD
T471) NORRIS A1 Adjustable Rosewood filled Dovetailed Panel plane (click for picture); approximately 13 3/8" long, 2
7/8" wide, 2 1/2" iron, approximately 2 5/8" remains slot to
edge. Large Norris stamp on iron; iron and body stamped 6. Rosewood
exceptionally nice - the only blemishes being a small 1/8" x 1/8"
corner chip to the lower front bun - see photograph when available, and a
similar size V-nick to the spur of the handle. Bright steel work is all round
very good, however just a trace of fine residual pitting remains on sole and
sides. I will in due course be photographing this plane, showing the two minor
blemishes in otherwise really exceptional rosewood, and providing views of sole
and both sides. All in all a very handsome and little used plane in very
exceptional condition. SORRY, SOLD
T423) NORRIS A1 Adjustable Jointer (click for
photograph), late model. 14 ½" long, 2 ½" iron, 2
3/8" remains. Original dark stained beech, rubbing away on handle and
knob, but otherwise fine. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T439) NORRIS A1 Dove-tailed, Rosewood infilled, adjustable Panel Plane
(click for photograph), 14 ½" long, 2
7/8" wide, 2 ½" wide iron (large Norris London stamp - the
older stamp) 1 ¼" remains. Rosewood very good, approximately 80%
lacquer remains, previous owner's stamp on front bun and in three places on
rear base infill. Bright steel good, all in all a very good plane. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T250) NORRIS A1 Dove-tailed Rosewood
infilled (Click for photograph)
1913 Patent Adjustable Panel Plane 15 ½" x 2 ¾". 2
½" wide iron, 2 3/16" of replacement iron remains - note:-
iron is stamped with small Norris stamp on front and Robert Sorby Sheffield
England on rear. Large Norris stamp on cap iron front, the letters ORRI being
worn away. Rosewood infill is very good with only minor nicks. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T376) NORRIS A1 17 ½" Late model Beech filled Panel Plane (Click for photograph); 2 ¾" wide, 2
½" wide iron, 2 5/8" remains. Bright steelwork fine, lacquered
woodwork likewise. The iron has not been honed, and it comes in the original worn box which has 80 - 90% labels intact. All
in all a rare opportunity to purchase a boxed Norris. G++/F. SORRY, SOLD
T607) NORRIS A1, Beech filled, late model Adjustable Jointer (click for photograph); 22 1/2" long,
approximately 2 7/8" wide, 2 1/2" wide Norris iron, approximately 2
5/8" remains slot to edge. Steelwork alround very good; 90% original dark
lacquer remains on the beech. Previous owner's stamp on the infill at heel. All
in all, a very nice and useful adjustable jointer. I should add that despite
this being a late model, they are very scarce indeed in this size. I think from
memory I have only seen two or three examples of a late model in this length in
the last 5 years or so. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T494) A fine and rare NORRIS Rosewood filled Dovetailed A1 Jointer 28
1/2" long, (this was the largest jointer available from the Norris
catalogue, and only 6 are currently known), 2 7/8" wide, 2 1/2"
wide, large stamp, Norris iron, 2 1/4" remains slot to edge. For the
record, we have three views of this very fine plane - first,
second, third. The large
stamp on the iron is somewhat uneven, with some of the N in Norris and the L
and the ON of London not totally stamped. Also the two R's in Norris on the
lever cap show very slight double impression. The rosewood is overall Fine,
with the original finish virtually complete; a small blemish to the right of
the front bun - approximately 1/8" x 1/2" x 1/16" - it looks
like a tiny sliver on the sharp edge below the bun has perhaps been detached
and re-glued. On the steel sides, a trace of very fine pitting - which could
undoubtedly be polished out - remains, mainly on the chamfers. Regarding the
sole, which is flat and lapped, there is a little residual pitting right at the
very toe - for perhaps the first 3/8". Other than that, there are just one
or two areas where there is pitting but it is very fine indeed - visible, but
not detectable to the finger. Rosewood Fine, steel G++ to Fine. SORRY, SOLD
T578) NORRIS No. 2 Open handled, Dovetailed, Rosewood infilled, Curved
sided Smoother (click for photograph). 7 5/8"
long sole, 2 1/2" wide at maximum, 2 1/8" wide Sorby parallel iron, 2
1/8" slot to edge remains. Rosewood very good, small blemish on front of
bun, together with what looks like a 1/8" diameter plugged hole in the top
of the bun, otherwise the rest of the rosewood is very good. Bright steelwork
very good with just a trace of fine pitting remaining - but of course in no way
affecting use. In all a nice early example; has clearly been very carefully
used. G+ to G++. SORRY, SOLD
T564) NORRIS No. 2 non-adjustable, Dovetailed, Rosewood infilled,
open-handled Smoother (click for photograph); 7
5/8" long, 2 1/2" maximum width, 2 1/8" wide Sorby parallel
iron, approximately 2 1/4" remains slot to edge. Bright steelwork good, slight
pitting on sole towards the heel, otherwise the sole is very good; very little
pitting on one side, but a slightly deeper area on the side facing the camera.
Rosewood very good, owner's stamp on either side. All in all an excellent plane
- G+ to G++. SORRY, SOLD
T666) NORRIS No. 2, Dovetailed, Openhandled,
Curved sided, Rosewood filled Smoother (click for
photograph) - not adjustable. Approximately 2 5/8” wide at maximum, 7 5/8” long, 2
1/4” wide iron stamped N, 2” remains. Cap iron double tapped, and
stamped Norris London. Steelwork very good, one or two stains, very fine
pitting. Rosewood very good, with some original lacquer; minor chip re-glued to
shoulder under iron – not at all obvious. All in all a very nice smoother,
G++. SORRY,
SOLD
T392) NORRIS No. 2 Dovetailed, Rosewood infilled, open-handled, curved
sided smoother (click for photograph), early model.
7 ½" sole length, 2 5/8" maximum width, 2 3/16" wide
Thomas Ibbotson very, very slightly tapered iron, 1 15/16" remains; iron,
back iron and rosewood infill all stamped 60. Rosewood very good, some residual
pitting remains to sides (see right-hand side) and sole, however good mouth. All in all, an attractive plane,
little used, as may be deduced from the long original iron. G+ SORRY, SOLD
T362) NORRIS A2, CURVED SIDE OPEN-HANDLED SMOOTHER (Click for photograph), approximately 7 3/4" long, 2
5/8" maximum width, twin-screw adjuster. 2 1/4" iron, 1 5/8" remains. Large Norris stamp. Iron
and body both stamped number 11. Both flanks of infill and on ramp below iron
stamped E SUMMERS (previous owner). Rosewood very good indeed, 90% remains of
original very dark lacquer, one small area of lacquer on flank wearing a trifle
thin due to pressure of palm and fore-finger. Bright steelwork very good,
dovetails quite clear. 90+% lacquer remains on gunmetal cap. Back iron clamping
screw - the slot is rather worn, but usable, but the plane comes supplied with
a recently machined replacement, should this be needed in the future. Overall a
fine collectable/user plane - I put the worn clamping screw-slot down to either
carelessness or perhaps the previous owner using an under-sized screwdriver.
SORRY, SOLD
T541) NORRIS No. 4, GUNMETAL (or possibly BRASS), STEEL-SOLED,
EBONY FILLED Curved sided, unhandled Smoother (click
for picture). 7 1/2" long, 2 5/8" wide at maximum, 2 1/4" wide Hearnshaw
Bros parallel iron, approximately 2 5/8" remains (slot to edge), Ward back
iron. Rear infill stamped by previous owner, 4 times. Steel sole very good;
little or no residual pitting. Rear ebony infill also good, except for old
striking button, that has been broken off. The front bun has had a very fine Y
crack pinned, with an ebony dowel. This looks like an old and very professional
repair to stop the crack moving any further, and the ebony dowel is not easily
seen. The gunmetal (or brass) has the usual minor nicks and scratches from use.
All in all, a very fine and attractive plane. G+ to G++ SORRY, SOLD This is a very rare Norris plane indeed. The
catalogue only lists this model as rosewood and dovetailed steel ;hence this
was one of the few examples in the Norris range of a 'made to special order'
plane.
T593) Norris No. 4 Dovetailed, Rosewood filled, Curved sided,
Unhandled Smoother (click for first and second view). 7 3/8" long, approximately 2 1/2"
maximum width, a fraction under 2 1/8" wide Sorby parallel iron,
approximately 1 3/8" remains slot to edge. Cap iron by Thomas Ibbotson. Do
please note: this thick parallel Sorby iron has had approximately 1/2"
removed at the top of the iron above the stamp. This does little for the looks
of the iron, but I have quite often seen where this has been done on unhandled
smoothers. I am sure it is not coincidence, and that the irons have been cut
down, so to speak, in order to make the planes easier and more comfortable to
manipulate. Also the corners of the iron on the bevel side have been taken off
by grinding. This of course in no way affects the use or operation of the
plane. The thick iron, when I have prepared the plane, will give a good fine
mouth. The sole when lapped should be well nigh blemish-free, the sides will
carry some very fine residual pitting. The rosewood is very good all round, the
front bun is stamped 3 times by previous owners, and there are two small
blemishes on the flank close to the iron. Perhaps 50% or a little more of the
original lacquer remains on the gunmetal screwcap. All in all, a G+ plane which
will work extremely well. SORRY, SOLD
T563) NORRIS No. 4 Unhandled, Dovetailed, Rosewood filled Smoother (click for photograph); 7 1/2" long, 2 1/2"
maximum width, 2 1/8" wide Sorby parallel iron, approximately 2"
remains, slot to edge. Rosewood good, 3 previous owner's stamps on the front
bun; old strike button hole re-plugged. Bright steel good, very slight residual
pitting, not affecting use. All in all, a nice attractive plane; an early
example. G+ to G++. SORRY, SOLD
T306) NORRIS A4 Adjustable Dove-tailed Smoother (Click
for photograph), curved sides, 7 ½" overall length, approximately
2 ½" maximum width, unusually a 2" cutter, 1 ¾"
remains of replacement iron; iron stamped with large 'NORRIS LONDON' stamp,
twin-hole cap-iron likewise. Twin screw adjuster has just a little more wear
than normal. Previous owner's stamp twice on one side of wood infill. This
plane has very minor pitting and bruising to steel and wood, some of which I
judge to have occurred by storing with other tools. All in all, a very rare
plane which is seldom seen - and the first we have ever had in stock. G+ to G++
condition. SORRY, SOLD
T372) NORRIS No. 5 Dovetailed, curved sided, closed handle (Click for photograph), Rosewood filled, (non-adjustable)
Smoother. 7 ½" long, 2 5/8" maximum width, 2
¼" wide iron with small stamp, 1 ¾" remains. Iron has
some pitting high up on the slot where it is in contact with the rosewood, so
not affecting use. New screw fitted to chipbreaker/iron. Rosewood good,
previous owner's stamp on toe and handle; flanks - bright steel good. All in
all a very good user plane. G+/G++. SORRY, SOLD
T473) NORRIS A5 Rosewood filled, dove-tailed, curved sided smoother (click for photograph), 7 3/4" long, approximately 2
11/16" at its widest, 2 1/4" wide large stamp Norris iron,
approximately 1 1/16" remains from slot to edge. Bright steelwork very
good, all consistent with the use the plane has had; some residual pitting
remains on the sides, and very slight residual pitting on the sole. Rosewood
very good, no damage, again consistent with usage. Previous owner's stamp on
steel, twice on one side, once on the other. In addition, the owner has punched
his initials HD on the steel, towards the back of the plane. G+ SORRY, SOLD
T481) NORRIS, Rosewood filled, Dovetailed Adjustable A5 Curved-sided
Smoother (Click for photograph); 8 7/8" long, 2
5/8" maximum width, 2 1/4" wide iron, 1 7/8" remains slot to
edge. Iron carries large (older) Norris stamp. Condition of rosewood and bright
steel is good, a little bruising to the top of the rosewood bun, perhaps 50% of
lacquer remains overall. Little original lacquer remains on the gunmetal screw
cap. The sole has been lapped and is flat; the sides are clean and bright. G+
to G++. SORRY, SOLD
T648) NORRIS A5 Late Model, Beech infill, Curved
sided, Adjustable Smoother, virtually unused in original box with original
packing and leaflets (click for photograph of plane
in box, and again for box lid). SORRY,
SOLD – but fortunately we did just have time to photograph
it! We also scanned the leaflets – click for outside
and inside of the A5 leaflet, and again
for the sharpening information folded within the A5 leaflet. And finally the
box labels – the top, and side
label.
T634) NORRIS
A5 Late Model, Beech infill Smoother (click for
photograph) SORRY, SOLD
T299) NORRIS A5 Curved sided Smoother (Click
for photograph) Late model stained beech infill. 2 1/8" blade, 1
¼" remains of iron stamped Norris London and Robert Sorby Sheffield
on reverse, as is normal with late irons. Also under the Norris stamp is that
of a previous owner. Overall the plane shows little wear, some rubbing of
varnish and a few minor scratches on the sole, otherwise very good. G++ SORRY, SOLD
T540) NORRIS A5 Curved sided, Beech infilled, late-model Smoother (click for picture); 7 5/8" long, approximately 2
1/2" wide at maximum, 2 1/8" Norris iron, 1 7/8" slot to edge
remains. Bright steelwork very good, very, very little pitting remains,
absolutely not affecting use; a little pitting remains on upper reaches of
iron, well above the slot. Woodwork very good. All in all a very good example
of this popular smoother. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T514) NORRIS late model, beech filled, adjustable A5 Smoother (click for photograph); 7 1/2" long, 2 3/8" wide,
2 1/8" iron, 1 11/16" remains slot to edge. Very little pitting
remains on the sole and sides; approximately 80% of the original dark lacquer
remains, and a similar proportion of lacquer remains on the gunmetal screw cap.
In all a very little used plane, which is in very good condition. However it is
unusual in one respect, which whilst noticeable, does not affect its use in any
way. As you may be able to see from this photograph,
the nose of the plane has not been perfectly squared off in manufacture - in
fact it is about 1/16" out. Also, the front bun has been shaped in a
rather asymmetrical manner. However, all has been finished in a perfectly
recognisable and conventional Norris manner. I think in this instance one of
two things could have happened. Either it was very carelessly machined and
finished off - which I do find hard to believe - or it was so shaped at a
specific customer's request. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T459) NORRIS A5 Beech filled Adjustable Smoother (click for photograph) approximately 7 1/2" long, 2
1/2" maximum width, 2 1/8" wide iron, 1 11/16 remains. 90+% of
original lacquer remains on infill, and bright steel retains 90+% of original
engine-turning. Owner's stamp on the rear infill (twice). 80% lacquer remains
on screwcap. In all a very fine example. G++. SORRY,
SOLD
T320) NORRIS A5 Beech Infill (Click for photograph), curved sided single
screw adjustable smoother 7 ½" overall length, 2 ½"
maximum width. 2 1/8" iron, 1 ¾" remains. Just a trace of
original engine turning on the sides. A few slight chips to original dark
varnish, generally a very good late model. G++ SORRY,
SOLD
T579) NORRIS A6 Dovetailed, Rosewood filled, Parallel sided,
Close-handled Smoother (click for photograph). 7 3/4" sole length, 2 5/8" wide, 2
1/4" wide large stamp Norris iron, 2 3/16" remains slot to edge,
Norris stamp cap iron. Rosewood very good indeed, 85%+ original lacquer
remains; previous owner's stamp twice on front bun, and on each cheek face.
Bright steel work is excellent, just a very fine mist of pitting and
discolouration remains on the sides and sole. G++ or better. SORRY, SOLD
T397) A6 Norris Rosewood filled, parallel-sided dovetailed smoother (Click for photograph) in box; 7 1/2" long, 2
½" wide, 2 1/8" iron, 2 1/8" remains. Rosewood bun is
also stamped Buck & Ryan, London (major London toolmerchants). Rosewood
very good, much lacquer remains on handle and knob, but none remains on flanks,
due probably to using the plane on its side. Steelwork good but dull, mouth
fine. Most probably used very little, but certainly stored outside its box.
Original box rubbed, but label very good. In all a G++, collectable plane,
which has come direct to me from a collector. SORRY,
SOLD
T409) NORRIS A6 Smoother, 7 ½" long, 2 5/8" wide,
2 ¼" wide iron, 1 ¼" remains (click
for left view, and right view). SORRY, SOLD
T492) NORRIS A12 Smoother (click for photograph)
SORRY, SOLD
T610) NORRIS No. 13 Rosewood filled, Annealed Iron Smoother (click for photograph), 8 3/4" long, 2 5/8" wide,
2 1/4" Norris large stamp iron, 1 9/16" remains slot to edge, back
iron also has large stamp Norris. Iron and body stamped OO (?) - a little
indistinct. Rosewood very good, with a small proportion of original lacquer
remaining. Front bun stamped twice by previous owner, and a fine trace of pitting
remains to the body. All in all a very nice plane, little used. G++. SORRY, SOLD
Gunmetal screwcap stamped Buck 242
Tottenham Court Road (1880 - 1930, according to British Planemakers). This
is an extremely crisp and attractive little plane. Since Buck were large tool
merchants, it is difficult to know whether this was supplied by Norris, and
stamped with the Buck name and address, or made and manufactured by Buck to the
Norris design. Either way, it is a very attractive plane in nice original
condition. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T588) NORRIS A14 Adjustable Annealed Iron Smoother (click for photograph). Approximate measurements 7
1/4" long, 2 1/2" wide, 2 1/8" wide large stamp Norris London
iron, approximately 1 3/8" remains slot to edge. Steelwork very good, with
only fine pitting. Rosewood very good, with rather nice figuring on both the
bun and the rear infill. This particular plane is a slightly earlier example of
this model - Norris did alter the casting pattern for this model by altering
the curve of the casting that receives the rear infill. Not a common plane.
G++. SORRY, SOLD
T524) NORRIS A14 Adjustable, unhandled Smoother (click
for picture); Rosewood filled, sole length 7", width 2 3/8"
(approximately), 2" wide Marples parallel iron, 2" remains slot to
edge. Body casting rather dull, sole lapped, just a mist of very fine pitting
detectable on the sides; rosewood infill good with usual small nicks and
blemishes of use, but with no loss or specific damage. On the heel there is a
previous owner's stamp, with an identifying mark of the letter V approximately
3/4" high, 1/2" wide maximum which has been pricked into the endgrain
- not very deep - sounds worse than it is - as it's right on the endgrain, it's
not at all noticeable. All in all, a very useful plane, in a very handy and
seldom-seen size. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T307) NORRIS No. 14 non-adjustable iron smoother (Click for photograph). 7" long, 2 5/8" maximum
width, 2 ¼" Ward iron, approximately 1 3/8" remains. Very
little used. Collectable plane with almost unblemished infill. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T470) NORRIS A17, Rosewood infilled, Gunmetal, curved sided, steel
soled Smoother (see right-handand left-hand side). 7 5/8" long, 2 11/16" at
widest, 2 1/4" wide large Norris stamp iron, 2 1/8" remains slot to
edge. 95+% original lacquer remains on the rosewood; previous owner's initials
stamped below the base of handle, also on the front bun; the front bun is also
stamped 'Buck & Ryan' (large London tool merchants). Perhaps 70 - 80% of
the original lacquer remains on the gunmetal of the plane body, approximately
90% remains on the gunmetal cap, but very little remains on the screw head -
see photograph when available. What will appear in the photograph to be
scratches on the sides is merely the original lacquer being rubbed with use.
Sole is very good, just a hint of very fine pitting on the sole and its edge,
together with the pins fixing the infill. In all, an exceptionally nice and
rare plane, G++ - Fine - anything better would probably still retain its
original box. A very desirable plane, which is always in demand. SORRY, SOLD
T378) NORRIS A17, Gunmetal, steel soled, curved sided smoother (Click for photograph). Very little used, steel sole and
iron just dulled from storage; just a trace of original lacquer left on the
gunmetal sides and toe; the lacquer is course 95% complete on the screw cap. A
very nice and collectable plane. SORRY, SOLD
T689) NORRIS No. 11 MITRE PLANE (click for photograph). A very nice example – but
sadly we have only the photograph. SORRY, SOLD
T517) Rare NORRIS A7 Adjustable Shoulder Plane, Dovetailed,
Rosewood infill (click for photograph). 8"
long, 1 1/4" wide, 1 1/4" wide iron, almost 7/8" remains. Iron
and wedge stamped 6. Original lacquer on rosewood 90% complete. Steelwork very
good, little if any pitting, mouth fine. An extremely nice example - adjustable
shoulder planes are always very scarce. SORRY, SOLD
T587) NORRIS No. 7 Rosewood filled Dovetailed Shoulder Plane, Skew
mouth (click for photograph). Approximate
measurements 8" long, 1 1/4" wide, 1 1/4" wide iron, minimum
steel available skew edge to shoulder 1 1/8", maximum 1 1/4". Body
and wedge stamped 3, Norris London iron is unusually un-numbered. Rosewood
infill very good, 90% of original lacquer remains. Sole is very good, however
the sides have taken some pitting. This is essentially a very little used plane
indeed; however, not uncommonly, long years in a box have resulted in some
pitting - not of course affecting use in any way. My feeling is that it would
not be appropriate to attempt to remove this. One further point, the wedge is
extremely tight - I would certainly advise an intending purchaser to leave any
form of easing until the plane has had ample time to acclimatise to a warmer
and drier environment. All in all it is a first class plane to use on the
bench. They are, as I'm sure you are aware, very seldom seen. I would grade it

T451) NORRIS No. 7 Dove-tailed Shoulder Plane (click for photograph), Rosewood filled, 8" long, 1
¼" wide, iron 1 ¼" wide, approximately 1 3/16"
remains. Body, wedge and iron all stamped 6; previous owner's stamp on top of
front infill. Bright steel very good, with only one or two minor blemishes of
pitting; infill very good, however lacquer on top of wedge worn - otherwise a
very good plane. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T512) NORRIS No. 18 Rosewood filled, Patent Metal Shoulder Plane (click for photograph); 7 3/4" long, 1 1/2" wide,
1 1/2" wide iron, approximately 1 1/8" remains. Body and wedge
stamped no. 20; previous owner's stamp to the metal below the strike button,
and on either side of wedge - twice on both sides. The bevel side of the iron
is quite deeply pitted - almost totally under the area covered by the wedge. Being
on the bevel side, this does not impair its use. A nice patina on the wedge,
but the exposed portion is significantly faded, as is the front infill - which
is just lightly stamped by the previous owner. Little or no residual pitting on
the sole, the mouth is fine; only a little residual pitting remains on the
cheek faces. In all, a very useful plane for the user. SORRY, SOLD
T621) NORRIS
No. 22 Dove-tailed, Rosewood filled Rebate Plane (click
for picture), approximately 7 3/4" long, 1 1/4" wide, 1 1/4"
wide Norris iron, approximately 13/16" remains. Steelwork very good,
rosewood very good, stamped on nose twice by previous owners, in addition to
'Norris London 22'. Body, wedge and iron all stamped 4. The Norris London stamp
on the end of the blade has all bar the NO of the Norris largely rubbed away.
All in all a little used, nice condition plane. G++. SORRY,
SOLD
T557) NORRIS No. 22 Rosewood infilled, Rebate Plane (click for photograph, also second photo),
7 5/8" long, approximately 1 1/4" wide, 1 1/4" wide iron,
approximately 1 3/16" remains. Iron, body and wedge stamped 1, previous
owner's stamp on toe and concealed area of wedge. Bright steel - sole is very
good, little or no residual pitting. As can be seen from the photographs, there
is some residual pitting on both sides. Infill rosewood very good, with perhaps
80+% of lacquer remaining, perhaps 40% of lacquer remaining on wedge. There is
evidence showing two re-glued chips on the wedge. Essentially, this is a new
plane, but rather poorly stored. Given the pitting on the sides, I suspect the
chips on the wedge occurred after it had possibly swelled and jammed tight. An
excellent plane for use. G+ SORRY, SOLD
T453) NORRIS No. 22 Rosewood filled Shoulder Plane (click for photograph), 7 7/8" long, 1 1/4" wide,
1 1/4" wide iron, 3/4" remains. Stamped 'Patent Metal' at heel.
Rosewood very good, stamped on wedge and body infill twice by previous owner. Body,
wedge and iron stamped 10. Bright steel very good, with very fine residual
pitting. In all a very good plane, with an extremely fine mouth. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T370) NORRIS Steel No. 22 Rosewood filled Shoulder Plane (Click for photograph). 7 ¾" long, 1 3/16"
wide, 1 3/16" wide iron, 1 1/16" remains. Body and iron stamped 7.

T530) NORRIS London Gunmetal, Steel soled
Bullnose Plane (click
for photograph), Rosewood Wedge. 1 1/8 wide x 3 3/4" approximately, iron 1
1/8", approximately 7/8" remains below shoulder. Iron, wedge and body
stamped 3. Fine mouth. Rosewood very good apart from some signs of compression
where it has been mechanically held (perhaps in order to release the iron).
Slight residual pitting on steel sole - not of course affecting use. Overall a
very nice example, which has seen very little use. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T542) NORRIS No. 25 Bullnose Plane (click
for picture), approximately 3 3/4" long, 1 1/8" wide, 1 1/8"
wide iron, a bare 7/8" remains, shoulder to edge. Body, wedge and iron
stamped 9, iron stamped Norris London. Bright steel good, with good mouth,
however this little used plane has one or two nicks and bumps on the steelwork,
and one or two residual pits on the sole, not affecting use. Whilst they could
be lapped out, it would really be a pity. Rosewood wedge, a little bruising,
but all in all an excellent plane for use, with most of the original iron. SORRY, SOLD
T681) NORRIS “Unbreakable” Bullnose,
with Rosewood Wedge (click for photograph), 3
3/4” long, 1 1/4” wide (the rather scarcer, wider model), 1
1/4” wide iron, 13/16” remains. Iron, Body and Wedge all stamped 4.
Metal body very good, fine mouth, one small ding on the edge of sole –
perhaps 1/32” wide and a little over 3/32” long; just a trace of
fine pitting on the upper chamfers and top. The iron has been re-ground and
sharpened, but in order to conserve steel, I have not ground it back to the
original bevel line – the previous bevel was rather shallow. Wedge very
good, one or two small nicks, some original lacquer remains. All in all a
little used plane. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T658) NORRIS Annealed Bullnose No. 25 with
Rosewood Wedge [sorry, no picture, but still recorded for the unusual size], 3
3/4” long, nominally
1”, actually 15/16” – do note, all the chamfers are intact,
and the plane has not been excessively lapped; I can only presume that it was
made purposely under the nominal catalogue size. Iron, body and wedge stamped
11; 15/16” wide iron, 7/8” remains. Metal finish very good, just a
little minor pitting, not of course affecting use, rosewood wedge good, just a
little bruising, all in all a very handy and useful little bullnose plane in a
very unusual extra narrow size. [The catalogue options are 1”, 1 1/8” and 1 1/4”]. G+ to

very good little plane, with full length iron. G+/G++. SORRY, SOLD
T466) NORRIS No. 27 Gunmetal Steel-soled Bullnose Plane, Rosewood
wedge (click for photograph). 3 3/4" long, 1
1/8" wide, 1 1/8" wide iron, 11/16" remains. Iron and body
stamped 4, rear gunmetal stamped 'Buck
& Ryan' (prominent London tool merchants). Gunmetal sides stamped by
previous owner.. All in all an attractive example of a scarce plane, with much
original lacquer to the rosewood wedge. G++. SORRY,

T422) NORRIS No. 27 Steel sole, Gunmetal, Rosewood Wedge, Bullnose
plane (click for photograph), 3 3/4" long, 1
1/8" wide, 1 1/8" wide iron, 7/8" remains. Iron, body and wedge
all stamped 3 (part impression only on wedge). Rosewood very good, steel and
gunmetal likewise; a very, very small area of pitting on nose section,
otherwise a little used example of this popular Norris plane. G++ SORRY, SOLD
T472) NORRIS No. 28 Malleable Iron Chariot Plane (click for photograph), Rosewood wedge, 3 1/4" long,
approximately 1 9/16" wide, 1 1/4" wide iron, appears very little
used - is still 5 7/8" long overall. Iron, body and wedge stamped 10,
though the numerals on the body are partially obscured by the strike button.
80% of the lacquer remains on the wedge; steelwork very good, though a little
dull; minute nick on rear of mouth - at most 1/64" x 1/64 - not of course
affecting use. Even though this is malleable iron, it is an attractive little
plane, very seldom seen in any condition and particularly scarce in such nice
condition. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T398) NORRIS A28 adjustable gunmetal chariot plane (Click for photograph). Ebony filled, 3 1/2"
long, 1 5/8" wide, 1 1/4" wide iron, 2" remains from edge to the
first hole. The iron has been ground from new, and used, but I suspect very
little. The iron shows some discolouration on both sides at the top, with two
little areas of fine pitting. The ebony wedge and infill are fine; the wedge
has three very small nicks or chips, two on the upper side and one underneath -
these are approximately 1/16" x 1/16", 1/16" x 1/8" and
1/16" x 1/8", all are 1/32" deep - these chips are extremely
inobvious, as can be judged from the size. The body shows some dulling from
storage; it has original lacquer on bridge and nose. The sole has some very
fine pitting; whilst this would be easy to lap out, on a collectable plane like
this I would be inclined to leave it. The mouth is unaltered from new. All in
all a fine and very rare plane,
probably the best example seen for some time. This plane has come directly to
me from a private collection. G++/Fine SORRY, SOLD
T641) NORRIS No. 50 Adjustable, Curved sided
Smoother, hardwood handle and bun (click for
photograph). Approximately 7 1/8”
long, 2 3/4” maximum width; 2 1/4” Sorby parallel iron, 1
5/8” slot to edge remains. Woodwork very good, approximately 50% of
original brown paint remains. Some slight pitting remains on sides and sole,
but not affecting use. Mouth good. G+. SORRY,
SOLD
T584) NORRIS A50, Adjustable, Curved sided, Close-handled Smoother (click for photograph), hardwood (possibly walnut) filled,
cast annealed body. Sole approximately 7" long, 2 3/4" wide at
maximum, 2 1/4" iron, approximately 1 7/8" remains, slot to edge.
Interestingly, whilst the cap iron is conventionally stamped 'Norris London',
the stamp on the face of the iron is Sorby, however on the reverse side of the
iron (when fitted - i.e. the bevel side) it is also stamped Norris London.
Whilst has been seen before, it is by no means common. The adjuster is
conventionally twin screw, but of the 'all steel' type, with a steel adjuster
knob. Bright metal is very good, though there is some very minor residual
pitting, not of course affecting use. Woodwork is very good; perhaps only 50%
of the original brown paint on the inner faces of the casting remains. This is
easily of course lost during even modest use. All in all a very useful and
handy plane for the user. G+ to G++. SORRY, SOLD
T460) NORRIS A50 Smoother (click for
photograph), sole length approximately 7 1/4", 2 5/8" maximum
width, 2 1/4" wide iron, (large stamp), 1 1/2" remains. Rear infill
stamped both sides by previous owner. Very fine hair-crack just on one side
only of infill. Generally an excellent and useful plane. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T495) NORRIS 50G Adjustable Gunmetal Smoother (click

T639) NORRIS No. 51 Adjustable, Parallel-sided
Smoother, hardwood handle and bun (click for
photograph). 7 1/8” long,
2 5/8” wide, 2 1/4” wide, large stamp Norris iron, 15/16”
remains, slot to edge. Most of the paintwork inside of the casting remains,
although it is showing the characteristic ‘orange peel’ effect with
age. Very slight pitting on body, woodwork very good; however, note –
whilst it’s difficult to be sure, on one side of the inner handle there
would appear to be a re-glued hairline crack – not of course affecting
usage. A short iron, but nonetheless, a very attractive and useful plane. Good
mouth. G+ SORRY, SOLD
T561) NORRIS No. 51 Parallel sided, Cast Adjustable Smoother (click for photograph); hardwood bun and handle (all steel
model - that is, including screw and cap and adjuster knob). 7 1/2" long,
2 3/8" wide, 2" wide large stamp Norris iron, only a bare 5/8"
remains slot to edge. Bright steelwork very good, little residual pitting.
Woodwork very good, but could possibly have been re-finished. Original
paintwork 70% intact. In all, a nice condition, small size smoother. It will of
course need a new iron some time, although the existing iron should still give
a goodly amount of use. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T488) Norris A51 Parallel-sided Smoother (click
for photograph), hardwood handle and bun, sole length 7 1/2", 2
11/16" wide, 2 1/4" wide iron, 1 1/4" remains; old large Norris
London stamp on iron. Twin screw Norris adjuster, steel adjuster knob. 70% or
so of original brown paint on casting remains; whilst woodwork is sound,
previous owner's name is stamped twice on sides of handle and once on bun.
There is good evidence on the woodwork of build-up of patina in some places,
and wear at finger pressure points at others. Overall the casting shows some
residual pitting, not affecting use - in the main away from the mouth area. All
in all a good plane for the user. SORRY, SOLD
T358) NORRIS A51 Parallel-sided Smoother (Click
for photograph), sole length 7", overall width 2 5/8", 2
¼" Norris iron, 1 7/8" remains. Large Norris stamp to iron and
back iron, some nicks on the top of the back iron - see photo, hardwood handle
and bun, possibly walnut, steelwork dull, but no significant pitting, paintwork
approximately 70% remains, similarly 70% of lacquer remains on the woodwork. A
good and useful user plane, G+ - G++. SORRY, SOLD

body is unstamped, the iron is stamped Preston, and the wedge and iron are both
stamped 19; the underside of the wedge is also stamped by a previous owner.
Steel sole good, as is gunmetal - just the usual minor blemishes, two of which
can be seen in the photograph on the front leading edge. The wedge apart from
two small nicks on the upper edge, is very good, All in all, a nice, little
used plane. G++. SORRY, SOLD

condition. G++ SORRY, SOLD
T683) PRESTON Nickel Plated Adjustable Shoulder
Plane (click for photograph). Approximately
8” long, 1 1/4” wide, 1 1/4” wide iron, 1 3/16”

indeed; one minor casting blemish on the side of the handle, and another on the
side of the body, the latter 1/8”
diameter, and perhaps 1/32” or so deep. A very nice plane indeed –
I would not say it is the best I have ever seen, but it is very close, and
certainly the best I have ever had; these are becoming very difficult to find
with the plating intact. G++. SORRY, SOLD

Preston & Sons Birm. Eng., with the Preston logo. Rosewood very good, few
small chips off wedge; bright steelwork very good, occasional very light traces
of pitting remains. Small nick on side of iron, approximately 1/8" below
shoulder - will not affect use until iron is all but exhausted. Fine mouth. G+

Rare PRESTON unhandled Gunmetal Ebony filled Smoother - very unusual design (click for photograph). 7 5/16" long, 2 5/8" wide,
approximately 2 1/4" wide Mathieson tapered iron, 2 3/8 remains slot to
edge. Fine mouth; ebony very good - previous owner's stamp on rear infill.
Gunmetal pleasantly patinated, but obviously with many fine nicks and
scratches. Gunmetal also stamped with previous owner on heel and toe. An extremely
distinctive plane - stylistic echoes of both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco
periods. G++ SORRY,

PRESTON Dove-tailed Rosewood filled (Click for photograph) unhandled curved-sided Smoother, 7
¼" long, 2 ½" maximum width, 2 1/8" iron, 1
3/8" remains of nicely stamped iron by infrequently seen maker T. S Kaye
& Son Hull. Rosewood stamped twice on toe and on each flank by previous
owners. Good Preston stamp on cap together with fine large knurled screw which
shows little sign of use. Good mouth, some fine pitting remains on sole,
slightly heavier and somewhat patchy pitting on sides. All in all a nice
attractive plane, little used. SORRY, SOLD
T538)
PRESTON Rosewood filled Open-handled Parallel sided Dovetailed Smoother (click for picture). 7 7/8" long, 2
1/2" wide, 2 1/4" wide Sorby iron, approximately 1 3/16"
remains. Rosewood very good, owner's stamp on bun; bright steel is free of any
residual pitting. Note - both sides and the sole of this plane have previously
been expertly lapped; this results in a rather cleaner look to the plane by
comparison with the rosewood. That said, it is a very good plane, quite typical
of Preston quality. G++. SORRY, SOLD

steel soled, Narrow Shoulder or Rebate Plane stamped A. PRICE LONDON (click for photograph). 7 3/8" long, 1" wide,
1" wide iron, approximately 1 3/16" remains edge to average shoulder
height. Snecked iron by W. Tyzack Sons and Turner, iron also stamped with
'elephant' motif and '1', the wedge and body are also stamped '1'. Steel sole
has just two spots of pitting, but not affecting use - scan of sole available
on request; the body has unusually thick sides, and whilst overall in very good
condition, there are just one or two marks and stains from storage. One or two
chips on the wedge have been unobtrusively repaired, otherwise the woodwork is
extremely good. All in all a very little used plane, from an uncommon (for this
type of plane) London maker; with the extra heavy sides contributing to
considerable weight for its size. G++. SORRY, SOLD

dull, just the occasional light spot of pitting. Nickel finish on cap complete,
but very dull. Original Record label on cap - perhaps 85% remains. Inner blue
paint perhaps 75% remains - loss is mainly concentrated in the mouth and
shoulder edges. In all a useful little plane - probably one of the best block
planes Record made. Ingenious locking mechanism on cap, which is both quick to
use and clamps firmly. Not common. G++. SORRY, SOLD

Screw-stem Plough (Plow) Plane by SANDUSKY TOOL Co., SANDUSKY, OHIO (click for photograph). No. 125, listed in their 1925
Catalogue as 'Applewood Panel Plow with Screw Stop, Boxed Fence with Handle'.
Sandusky made at this time 28 variants of the panel plough; nos. 116 to 143, in
various woods ranging through beech, apple, boxwood, rosewood and ebony. All
woodwork in very nice condition, with nice patination. Screw stems in very good
order, just one or two minor chips, with just a little bruising to the ends.
One or two minor chips to the threads - just nicks really, nothing very
serious. All four nuts are in nice condition, with no observable cracking. The
wedge is bruised, and there is a small flake of wood missing from the top of
the spur - I would judge approximately 3/4" long, 1/4" wide, and
perhaps 1/16" deep. There is also a small blemish on the handle, where a
knot has occurred in the timber. There is also some scoring and bruising to the
boxing on the fence. Metalwork and brasswork is in very good condition.
Overall, the plane is in very attractive condition. Just one iron (Ibbotson No.
5) is fitted to the plane. A lovely plane. G++. SORRY,

MELHUISH London (copy of SPIER'S) GUNMETAL Shoulder Plane (Click

5/8" long, 1 ¼"wide, 1 ¼" Ward iron, 1 3/8"
remains. Iron stamped 4 as is body. Original varnish 95%; just an edge of
original lacquer on gunmetal remains. Three very fine hair-line cracks across
infill. Note:- a very interesting and scarce model, with an identical profile
to T331, the Spiers steel shoulder plane recently
sold by us. Given the similarity of this plane to Spier's models, and the fact
that Melhuish was essentially a tool dealer, it is very probable that this
plane was made by Spiers for Melhuish. The iron has been sharpened but very
little used. A very attractive plane, with little chance of being repeated. G++

Steel Rosewood filled Shoulder Plane (Click for

of slightly deeper pitting on each side - see photo . G+

SPIERS Curved sided, Rosewood filled, Dovetailed (most likely - but very
unobtrusive) Unhandled Smoother (click for pictures of left
side, right side, bun), 7
13/16" long, 2 7/8" wide at maximum, 2 1/2" wide James Howarth
iron, together with Howarth cap iron. Cap iron, iron and body all stamped '5'.
Rosewood - both front and rear infills are very variegated, with a large, much
lighter area, particularly on the rear infill. One or two bruises to the rear
infill, and on the front bun, an original owner's name has been erased, causing
a very slight depression. Steelwork on the sides is good, though with some
slight pitting. However, one or two of the pins fixing the infill show boldly
on the sides, and are just very fractionally proud to the surface - just
perceptible to the fingertip. I suspect that alterations in climatic conditions
have caused just fractional changes. Whilst I have lapped the sole, some
pitting remains - not of course affecting use. I am reluctant to go further,
since this plane with a 2 1/2" wide iron appears to be a special order
from Spiers; the standard catalogue width is 2 1/4" with an additional
payment for each extra 1/8". The gunmetal screwcap has a large Spiers Ayr
stamp, right way up; however to one side there are a number of small 'bruises'
which I can only assume have come from being stored with adjacent metal tools.
All in all, an interesting plane, both for the collector and user. It weighs in
at an astonishing 4lbs 14 1/4oz. (For comparison a Norris 50g gunmetal,
handled, adjustable smoother with full length iron is 4lb 12oz). SORRY, SOLD

neatly on gunmetal screw cap. An attractive plane. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T326)
SPIERS AYR Dove-tailed (just visible) Rosewood Infilled (Click for photograph) unhandled Curved-side Smoother. 7
½" long x 2 5/8" overall width. 2 ¼" Mathieson
blade (with Howarth cap), 1 5/16" remains. Condition - a little light
pitting remains on sides and sole, mouth very good. Rosewood very good,
previous owner's stamp on front. All in all a nice plane. G++ SORRY, SOLD
T536)
SPIERS Unhandled Rosewood filled Dovetailed Smoother (click
for photograph), 7 3/8" long, approximately 2 1/2" wide, 2 1/8"
wide Marples parallel iron, 1 13/16" remains, slot to edge. Cap iron and
body stamped 1; small Spiers Ayr upside down stamp on screw cap, owner's stamp
on heel and toe, and behind iron on rosewood. Rosewood very good - just normal
signs of use, but very good with no damage. Curved sides and sole have just
some fine residual pitting, of course not affecting use. All in all a very nice
little plane. G++. SORRY,
SOLD
T302)
SPIERS unhandled Rosewood filled Curved sided Smoother (Click
for photograph) 7 ½" long, 2 5/8" maximum width. Good
parallel iron by Hearnshaw, 2 ¼" wide, 2" of steel remains,
chip breaker cap by Ward. All in all a very nice plane, rosewood crisp, very
minor pitting on sole. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T535)
SPIERS Rosewood filled, Parallel sided, Open handled, Dovetailed (very hard to
discern) Smoother (click for photograph). Sole 8"
long x 2 1/2" wide; Marples iron, 2 1/4" wide, 2 1/4" remains, very
slightly tapered. Cap iron by Ibbotson, stamped 2, as is rosewood. Spiers Ayr
large stamp, right way up. Rosewood stamped by previous owner on toe, also
stamped 'D Galloway & Co Edinburgh' - presumably a tool merchant. Some
residual pitting on steel. The rosewood however is particularly attractive,
with much lacquer intact, making this a most attractive and handsome plane.
Definitely G++ at the very least. SORRY,
SOLD.
T416)
SPIERS Rosewood filled, Dove-tailed, open-handled, curved-sided smoother (click for photograph), (dovetails are only just
discernible on one side). 7 1/2" sole length, 2 1/2" maximum width, 2
1/8" wide Thomas Ibbotson iron, 1 1/8" remains slot to edge; iron,
back iron and body stamped 1. On one upper side identification letters
approximately 1/4" high LTS have been lightly scratched in steel. Bright
steelwork otherwise good, though some residual pitting remains to sole and
sides; rosewood very good, however a clean break exists at the bottom of the handle
(click for photograph) - this appears quite fresh,
and will require re-gluing and pinning. Unfortunately open-handled planes are
very vulnerable to this particular fracture. All in all, an excellent condition
plane, which when re-pinned will prove attractive and serviceable. G+. SORRY, SOLD
T622) SPIERS
Rosewood filled, Screw-sided, Improved Pattern Mitre Plane (click for picture, and again
for the other side). Approximately 10 3/4" long overall,
approximately 2 3/4" wide, 2 1/4" wide Ward snecked iron,
approximately 1 7/8" of usable steel remains. Body and blade stamped 5.
Steel very good, as is the rosewood, previous owner's stamp in throat, on the
nose and under the blade. These last two stampings have been partially
obliterated. One further note - whilst the iron is still almost full length, a
previous owner has attempted to grind the bevel 'freehand' (click for picture). Whilst his handiwork is not visually
attractive, it would be very wasteful to completely replace it by a precision
bevel. Of course, this does not affect the use in any way. All in all, an
attractive and very useful, and now becoming, very scarce plane. G+ to G++. SORRY, SOLD
T534) SPIERS
Mitre Plane (click for picture), Rosewood front infill
and wedge, Dovetailed; rounded heel, square toe with sole extension at toe.
Bridge stamped with small upside down Spiers Ayr, but completely overstamped by
Archer Goodge Street. I think Archer's intention here was to pass off a Spiers
product as their own make. Nigel Lampert's book refers to this phenomenon - see
page 22 - but it does give a clue to the probable age of the plane (Archer
worked between 1842 and 1863). Sole length is 10 3/8" x 2 5/8" wide.
The snecked iron is by Moulson Brothers, and is additionally stamped 'Improved
Welded', which I take to mean improved techniques in forge welding the
laminate. Overall length of the iron is some 9", the iron being 2
1/4" wide; a good 2" of lamination remains. Rosewood very good.
Steelwork very good , with just some residual pitting. Two marks visible in the
steel on one side, and one on the other, I suspect are nothing more than slots
in the heads of the screws for fixing the bridge. A very nice and attractive
mitre plane, with the intriguing trade over-stamping. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T479)
SPIERS Mitre Plane (click for photograph), approximately
8 1/2" x 2 3/8", snecked iron 1 7/8", overall length 7
1/2", stamped J. Herring & Sons England. Mouth opening in sole very
fine - with the iron completely retracted it is 26 thou (0.026" - less
than 1/32"); with the iron starting to cut the mouth is a staggeringly
small 8 thou (0.008"). Gunmetal cap stamped SPIERS AYR (right way up);
screw unusually has steel rather than gunmetal thread. If this was a
modification, it would seem to have been done a long time ago. Very dark
rosewood infill, which is stamped with owner's name twice at front, once at
rear under blade; front infill appears to have been in two halves - or
alternatively an amazingly straight, central, hairline crack! An attractive
plane in a useful small size. G+. SORRY, SOLD
T537)
SPIERS AYR Rosewood filled Dovetailed Panel Plane (click
for picture), 13 3/4" long, 2 7/8" wide, 2 1/2" wide James
Howarth iron, 1 3/8" remains. Rosewood very good; old and very neat repair
to spur tip - expertly done and hard to see. Very fine, just discernable
hairline crack in handle aperture; owner's stamp on bun and heel, some minor
marks on top of bun. Bright steel work very good, but some very fine pitting
remaining on sides and sole, not affecting use. A very nice, handy sized plane.
SORRY, SOLD
T543)
SPIERS Rosewood filled, Dovetailed Panel Plane (click
for picture), 13 3/4" long x 2 7/8" wide, 2 1/2" wide Richard
Ibbotson very slightly tapered iron, 2 3/8" slot to edge remains. Rosewood
very good, however the handle has a very elegant and extended spur which, many
years ago, has been beautifully re-tipped; whoever did the work was an
absolutely expert craftsman, for the result looks extremely fine and is not at
all easy to detect. Bright steelwork has some residual pitting, of course not affecting
use. Overall a very fine and attractive plane. G++. SORRY,
SOLD
T544)
SPIERS 20 1/2" Rosewood filled, Dovetailed Jointer (click
for picture), 2 3/4" wide, small Spiers Ayr stamp, right way up; 2
7/16" Ward tapered iron, 1 5/8" remains slot to edge. Iron, cap and
rosewood all stamped 3. Rosewood very good - usual marks from use, but no
damage. Some residual pitting, but all very consistent with a modestly used
original iron. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T380)
SPIERS Dovetailed Rosewood filled Panel Plane (Click for
photograph), 15 5/8" long, 2 7/8" wide, 2 ½" wide
Mathieson iron, 1 ½" remains. Bright steelwork very good, as is
rosewood; previous owner's stamp on bun and behind handle; good mouth. Weighs
over 10 lbs. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T412)
SPIERS Jointer, 20 ½" long, 2 7/8" wide, 2 ½"
iron, 2 3/8" remains (click for photograph).
Iron and cap also stamped Stewart Spiers, Ayr, Scotland. Rosewood very good
with nice patina; front bun has corner chip that has been re-glued - now
appears only as hair-line crack. Bright steel very good. In all a fine plane,
of a type that is becoming increasingly sought after - the equivalent Norris
with adjuster is likely to cost at least 1000.00 pounds more! G++. SORRY, SOLD
T338) STANLEY No. 4 Smoother (Click for photograph), type 6A (1891/92). 3 patent dates on lateral, and nib
under lever. Cap iron type 12 (x) (1919/24) (Walter's page 682/3). 9
½" long, 2 3/8" wide, 2" iron, 1 ¾" remains.
Steelwork - one or two marks otherwise very good, paint - approximately 80%
remains. Handle and low knob very good. Two points worth noting - three hair
cracks approximately ¼" long radiate up from knob base, and handle
has filled hole approximately 1/8" diameter ½" up from base.
Both points not easily detected. In general a very good condition plane. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T404) STANLEY No. 9 Cabinetmakers block plane, adjustable mouth,
rosewood knob (click for picture). Sole length 9 1/8" maximum, body approximately 7 5/8", 2
1/4" overall width, 2" wide SW iron. There will be close to 2"
of usable steel, slot to edge when a new bevel is honed and ground - that is,
close to full length. Iron trademark type Y (1921-1922), plain lever cap.
Steelwork a little dull, and odd scratches consistent with very modest use.
There are two or three small scratches on one side of the plane which should be
noted - I suspect that at least two of them could possibly very minor blemishes
in the original casting, revealed when the plane was originally machined from
new. These are in the order of 3/8" long by at most 1/32" wide. I
would say 90% of the original black enamel remains on the inside; that small
amount that is missing is on the underside of the bracket holding the knob. A
very nice and attractive plane, and of course, most important of all, undamaged
in the vulnerable area of the rear adjuster bracket. SORRY, SOLD
T449)
STANLEY No. 20 Nickel plated Circular Plane (click for
photograph). 9 ½" long, 2 ¼" wide, 1 ¾"
wide blade, 7/8" remains. Some residual pitting on upper flexible sole;
approximately 80% nickel remains. G+. SORRY, SOLD
T430)
STANLEY No. 51/52 Chute Board and Plane (click for
photograph), patent date cast in board and plane. 90% japanning remains on
plane and board; bright steel work very good. Hold-down clamp is steel
replacement, as are (probably) the two wing nuts. Stanley V trademark on very
good iron (2" remaining slot to edge). Original rosewood handle was cut
from a piece of rosewood with significant colour variation - lower section is
quite light in colour. All in all this is a very fine plane, that will quickly
become indispensable in the workshop. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T157)
STANLEY No. 97 Cabinet maker's Edge Plane (Click for
photograph), appears to be Type 4 (1922 - 1935) Sweetheart TM on cutter. VG
condition, a very little loss of paint on one edge. Rosewood knob. 10"
long, 2 ¼" wide, 2" iron remains. Please note this plane is
un-chipped on its front edge. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T482)
Attractive Summers & Varvill Quirk, Ovolo Astragal Moulding Plane (click for scan of end, general view),
very little used. SORRY, SOLD
T645) TYZACK Hollow
Brass-Stemmed, Handled Beech Ploughplane (click for
photograph). Whilst the plane is stamped Tyzack, 8 Old Street, London, this is
undoubtedly a Mathieson plough,
stamped for sale by one of London’s major tool merchants. Woodwork good,
some bruising on the wedge, and the inevitable nicks and bruises acquired over
the years. Nice patina. There is of course some pitting to both the skate and
the heads of the screws securing it, and the clamping screw for the depth
adjustment. Otherwise, I suspect that this is a plane which has seen little
use. G+. SORRY, SOLD
T502)
MARPLES 'Ultimatum' Brass framed ebony Brace (click for
photograph); ivory ring in head. Two or three fine hair-line cracks,
approximately 3/4" long, radiate from either end of rotating handle - too
fine to register in photograph. Ebony stamped once, frame stamped twice by
previous owners. Not seen a lot of use - both head, frame and handle quite
tight. G++. SORRY, SOLD
T476)
W. MARPLES & SONS, SHEFFIELD, HIBERNIA Plated BRACE (click
for photograph). Triple shamrock device on screwcap (click
for photograph). Ebony head lacks ivory ring. Button bit release, 19
stamped on nozzle. Owner's name stamped twice on woodwork. Nice example in
unrestored condition. G+. SORRY, SOLD

brass neck and ebony head. Fine hexagonal frame with spring thumb catch. A very
good example of these under-rated braces. G++. SORRY,

T673) The “MACO”
Adjustable Template (click for photograph). British Patent
No. 160629/20, Series No. 259, Type 1. Probably the smallest size made –
the brass pins will measure a moulding 2” wide; overall width of template
3 5/8”. In original box, unfortunately the lid has been strengthened with
masking tape, and label is very dark; however there are useful instructions
within on the care and use of the template. A nice example of a useful small
size. SORRY, SOLD

left in situ when the lock was removed; secondly, the key only enters from one
