BILL CARTER - CONTEMPORARY PLANEMAKER
English planemaker Bill Carter started his working
life apprenticed as a carpenter and joiner, later working in the
Leicester museum service as a joiner. Over the past 15 years he
has turned his considerable craft skills to the making of fine
tools, concentrating on planes - ranging from miniatures to a
26" Norris type jointer, his biggest to date. Most of the
planes he makes are copies of originals seen in catalogues and
books; latterly he has concentrated on metal planes. His reputation
for plane-making is literally world-wide; he is acknowledged both
for his exquisite hand workmanship and for his knowledge of planes.
Bill and his planes have been featured in 'Woodworker', Furniture
and Cabinetmaking (issue no. 33), and Garrett Hack's recent book
'Classic Hand Tools'.
